The past perfect continuous tense is used to describe an action or event in the past that started before another past action or event and continued until after it. In other words, a past perfect continuous tense describes an action that started in the past, continued in the past, and ended at a certain point in the past. It is formed by using had been + the present participle of the main verb. For example; I had been studying for hours when she called me.
