Grammar Quiz
Choose the word that completes each sentence correctly. Filter by level to practise grammar at your own stage.
Grammar Quiz gives you a sentence with a word or phrase missing and four options to fill the gap. Pick correctly and you find out why it works; pick wrong and you find out why not — every question comes with an explanation, not just a score.
What Is Grammar Quiz?
Grammar Quiz is a multiple-choice grammar quiz from English Finders’ Practice tools. Each round takes a sentence from a hand-curated bank, blanks out one word or phrase, and asks you to choose the option that completes it correctly from four choices. The correct answer is never sent to your browser until after you answer — it stays on the server and is only revealed once you’ve made your choice, so there is no way to read it out of the page source.
How to Play Grammar Quiz
- Optionally choose a CEFR level from the dropdown — Any level, A1, A2 or B1 — to filter which sentences you get.
- Read the sentence with the blank and choose one of the four options shown.
- See immediately whether you were right, along with a short explanation of the grammar rule either way.
- Move on to the next sentence.
- Work through 12 sentences in a row to complete one session.
- Check your final score once the session ends, then start a new session whenever you like.
Grammar Quiz Rules
- Each session is exactly 12 sentences, answered one after another.
- Every sentence offers four answer options, and only one is correct.
- An explanation of the grammar rule is shown after you answer, whether you got it right or wrong — Vocabulary Quiz and Definition Match, by contrast, don’t explain wrong answers.
- Sentences are drawn from a hand-curated bank currently spanning three levels: A1, A2 and B1 — Grammar Quiz doesn’t yet reach B2, C1 or C2.
- The bank currently covers eight grammar topics: articles, prepositions, present tense, past tense, comparatives, subject-verb agreement, modals and quantifiers.
- Once you’ve seen every sentence at your chosen level, sentences start repeating rather than ending the session early.
- Grammar Quiz is free to play, with no account or sign-up required.
Benefits of Playing Grammar Quiz
Because every question comes with an explanation instead of just a right-or-wrong mark, Grammar Quiz works less like a test and more like a running grammar lesson — you find out why an answer works, not only whether you guessed correctly. Filtering by CEFR level lets you drill the grammar patterns suited to your own stage, from basic articles and prepositions at A1 up through comparatives and modals at B1. Because a session pulls fresh sentences from the bank and only repeats once you’ve exhausted a level, regular practice keeps surfacing sentences you haven’t seen yet before anything repeats. This kind of structured, level-matched grammar drilling lines up with the practice the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) recommends for moving from one proficiency level to the next.
Tips for Solving Grammar Quiz
- Read the whole sentence, not just the blank — the explanation often hinges on a word elsewhere in the sentence that decides which option actually fits.
- Not sure of the answer? Guess anyway and read the explanation — it’s shown whether you’re right or wrong, so a wrong guess is still a genuine chance to learn the rule.
- Start on “Any level” if you’re not sure where you stand, then switch to one CEFR level once you notice which mistakes you keep making.
- Since sentences repeat once you’ve seen them all at a level, treat a repeat as a quick check on whether the explanation actually stuck.
- Try Error Correction next — a related but harder skill: spotting a mistake that isn’t flagged for you, instead of picking a correct filler from a shortlist.
Who Can Play Grammar Quiz?
Grammar Quiz is free, with no account or sign-up needed. It suits any English learner working through A1–B1 grammar — articles, prepositions, verb tense, comparatives, agreement, modals and quantifiers — and works equally well for first-time practice or revision, since sentences keep cycling through the bank as you play. Learners already comfortable at B2 and above should look to other English Finders Practice tools, such as Reading Quiz, which does span the full CEFR range, since Grammar Quiz’s own bank currently stops at B1.
