Vocabulary Quiz
Choose the meaning that matches the word. Filter by level to practise vocabulary at your own stage.
Vocabulary Quiz shows you a word and four possible meanings — pick the one that actually matches, and the quiz tells you straight away if you got it right.
What Is Vocabulary Quiz?
Vocabulary Quiz is a multiple-choice word-meaning tool from English Finders’ Practice tools. Each round shows one word and four definitions pulled from English Finders’ shared dictionary; only one definition is correct. The word and its distractor definitions are chosen from real dictionary entries at the level you pick, so the wrong answers are genuine definitions of other words — not made-up decoys.
How to Play Vocabulary Quiz
- Choose a CEFR level from the dropdown, or leave it on “Any level” to mix levels.
- Read the word shown at the top of the question.
- Read the four definitions underneath it.
- Tap or click the definition you think matches the word.
- The quiz marks your choice as correct or not straight away, then moves you on.
- Keep going until you reach the end of the twenty-question session, then start a new one if you like.
Vocabulary Quiz Rules
- Each session is twenty questions long.
- Every question has exactly four answer options, with exactly one correct definition.
- You get one answer per question — once you pick, that round is scored and locked in.
- Vocabulary Quiz does not show an explanation after you answer, just whether you were right.
- The words and definitions are matched from English Finders’ own dictionary, filtered to the CEFR level you chose (or drawn from any level if you leave the filter open).
- Vocabulary Quiz is free to play, with no account or sign-up required.
Benefits of Playing Vocabulary Quiz
Multiple-choice recognition is one of the fastest ways to check whether a word’s meaning has actually stuck, without the pressure of having to produce a definition yourself from scratch. Because English Finders draws its questions from a dictionary of over 64,000 words across all six CEFR levels (A1 through C2), you can start with everyday words and work your way up to more advanced vocabulary as your level improves, rather than being limited to a small, fixed word list.
Tips for Vocabulary Quiz
- Read all four definitions before picking one — two can sound similar at a glance.
- If a word looks unfamiliar, try to spot word parts you recognise (prefixes, suffixes, or a root you know from another word) before guessing.
- Start with a specific CEFR level close to your own so the vocabulary matches your current stage, rather than mixing levels straight away.
- Since there’s no explanation shown afterward, jot down words you got wrong so you can look them up properly later.
- Play a full twenty-question session in one sitting rather than a few questions at a time — it gives a clearer picture of your current level.
Who Can Play Vocabulary Quiz?
Vocabulary Quiz suits any English learner who wants a quick, low-pressure way to test whether they actually know a word’s meaning or are just guessing from context. Because it spans all six CEFR levels, it works equally well for beginners building a first core vocabulary and advanced learners polishing recognition of less common words, including anyone preparing for exams like IELTS or Cambridge that lean heavily on vocabulary range.
