Spelling Quiz
Listen to the word and type what you hear. Filter by level to practise spelling at your own stage.
Spelling Quiz plays you a word out loud and asks you to type exactly what you hear — no text, no clue beyond the sound itself and how many letters to expect.
What Is Spelling Quiz?
Spelling Quiz is a listen-and-type spelling tool from English Finders’ Practice tools. Each round picks a word from English Finders’ shared dictionary, generates audio of it using text-to-speech, and asks you to type what you hear. The word is never shown as text before you answer — revealing it, even hidden in the page, would let you read the answer instead of listening for it. You can replay the audio as many times as you like before submitting.
How to Play Spelling Quiz
- Optionally choose a CEFR level from the dropdown — Any level through C2 — to filter which words you’re tested on.
- Press Listen to hear the word.
- Type what you hear into the box, replaying the audio with “Play again” as many times as you need.
- Submit your answer to see whether you spelled it correctly, with the correct spelling shown either way.
- Move on to the next word.
- Work through 15 words to complete one session, then check your final score.
Spelling Quiz Rules
- Each session is 15 words, one after another.
- The word is never shown as text before you answer — only its audio, generated on the fly, and how many letters it has.
- You can replay the audio as many times as you like before submitting.
- Spelling is checked as an exact, case-insensitive match against the dictionary’s own spelling.
- Words are drawn from English Finders’ full shared dictionary of over 64,000 words spanning all six CEFR levels, A1 through C2 — choosing “Any level” can surface genuinely advanced vocabulary.
- Spelling Quiz is free to play, with no account or sign-up required.
Benefits of Playing Spelling Quiz
Because you never see the word before you answer, Spelling Quiz tests the skill spelling practice is actually for — writing a word correctly from how it sounds, not recognising it from how it looks. Filtering by CEFR level lets you match the difficulty to your own stage, from short A1 words up through longer, less phonetic C1 and C2 vocabulary.
And because every session draws from the same 64,000+ word dictionary the rest of English Finders uses, there is effectively no limit on how many genuinely different words you’ll be tested on before anything repeats. This kind of level-matched practice lines up with what the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) recommends for building vocabulary at the right difficulty for your stage.
Tips for Solving Spelling Quiz
- Listen more than once before typing — English has plenty of words that sound similar but are spelled differently, and a second listen often catches a detail the first one missed.
- Use the letter-count hint if you’re stuck choosing between two spellings of different lengths.
- Start on “Any level” to get a feel for pacing, then pick a single CEFR level once you notice the words are consistently too easy or too hard.
- A wrong answer still shows you the correct spelling, so treat every miss as a word to remember, not just a lost point.
- Since spelling is checked as an exact match, watch out for doubled letters and silent letters — two of the most common ways English spelling trips people up.
Who Can Play Spelling Quiz?
Spelling Quiz is free, with no account or sign-up needed. Because it draws from English Finders’ full dictionary across all six CEFR levels, it suits complete beginners spelling short A1 words just as well as advanced learners tackling C1 and C2 vocabulary — the level filter is what makes it appropriate for either.
It’s also useful for anyone who reads English confidently but wants more practice producing it from sound alone, since that’s a distinct skill spelling drills specifically target.
