Definition Match

Pair each word with its meaning. Harder than a quiz: the meanings are all plausible.

Match The Definition shows you four words and four shuffled meanings at once, and asks you to pair every word with its correct definition — all four have to be right, not just one.

What Is Match The Definition?

Match The Definition (the tool itself is called Definition Match) is a pairing tool from English Finders’ Practice tools, and a harder cousin of Vocabulary Quiz built from the same word data. Instead of picking one correct meaning out of four options, you’re given four words and four meanings at once, all mixed up, and have to sort out which meaning belongs to which word — so getting one pair right isn’t enough on its own, since a wrong guess on one word can throw off another.

How to Play Match The Definition

  • Choose a CEFR level from the dropdown, or leave it on “Any level” to mix levels.
  • Look at the four words and four meanings shown for the round.
  • Select a word, then select the meaning you think matches it.
  • Pair up all four words and meanings.
  • Tap Check answers to see how many of the four pairs you got right.
  • Keep going until you reach the end of the five-round session, then start a new one if you like.

Match The Definition Rules

  • Each session is five rounds long.
  • Every round has exactly four words and four meanings to pair up.
  • You get one check per round — once you tap Check answers, that round is scored and locked in.
  • Match The Definition tells you how many of the four pairs were correct, but doesn’t show an explanation for the ones you missed.
  • The words and meanings are drawn from English Finders’ own dictionary, filtered to the CEFR level you chose (or drawn from any level if you leave the filter open).
  • Match The Definition is free to play, with no account or sign-up required.

Benefits of Playing Match The Definition

Picking one correct definition out of three distractors, as Vocabulary Quiz does, is a recognition task with a safety net — you can often spot the right answer by eliminating the obviously wrong ones. Matching four words to four meanings at once removes that safety net, since every meaning shown is a real definition of one of the four words in front of you, not a made-up decoy.

That makes it a genuinely harder test of whether you actually know a word’s meaning, and a useful way to check that similar-sounding words haven’t blurred together in your memory. Drawing from a dictionary of over 64,000 words across all six CEFR levels, it covers the same broad vocabulary range as Vocabulary Quiz, just tested differently.

Tips for Match The Definition

  • Start with the word and meaning you’re most confident about, and pair those first — it narrows down the remaining options.
  • Watch for meanings that sound similar; the four options are always real definitions of the four words shown, so a close-sounding pair is often a deliberate trap.
  • Start with a CEFR level close to your own stage, since mixing levels can put an easy word next to a much harder one.
  • If you get some pairs wrong, look up the word you missed afterward, since Match The Definition doesn’t show an explanation on the page.
  • Play Vocabulary Quiz alongside this tool — it tests the same words with a safety net, which is a good way to build up before trying the harder pairing format here.

Who Can Play Match The Definition?

Match The Definition suits English learners who want a tougher vocabulary check than a simple multiple-choice quiz. Because a session is short — five rounds of four pairs each — it works well as a quick, focused vocabulary check-in rather than a long study session. Its coverage of all six CEFR levels makes it useful for beginners solidifying an early word list and advanced learners double-checking that closely related words haven’t blurred together, including anyone preparing for exams like IELTS or Cambridge that test precise vocabulary knowledge.
