Pronunciation Practice

Say the word out loud and see if your browser recognises it. Filter by level to practise at your own stage.

Pronunciation Practice shows you a word, listens as you say it out loud, and tells you whether your browser recognised it correctly — no recording is ever sent anywhere.

What Is Pronunciation Practice?

Pronunciation Practice is English Finders’ newest Practice tool, and the first to cover the Pronunciation skill category. Unlike every other tool here, it doesn’t ask you to choose, type, or reorder anything — it shows you a word as plain text, you tap Speak and say it aloud, and your own browser’s built-in speech recognition transcribes what it heard and compares it to the word. There’s no server-side answer to hide, because there’s nothing to hide: the word is shown to you openly, and scoring happens entirely on your device.

How to Play Pronunciation Practice

  • Choose a CEFR level from the dropdown, or leave it on “Any level” to mix levels.
  • Read the word shown on screen.
  • Tap Speak and allow microphone access if your browser asks.
  • Say the word out loud clearly.
  • Your browser transcribes what it heard and Pronunciation Practice tells you if it matched.
  • Tap Listen if you want to hear the correct pronunciation first, then try again or move on to the next word.
  • Keep going until you reach the end of the fifteen-word session, then start a new one if you like.

Pronunciation Practice Rules

  • Each session is fifteen words long.
  • Every word is shown to you as plain text before you speak — there’s nothing to guess.
  • Recognition happens through your browser’s own speech-to-text feature; nothing you say is uploaded to English Finders’ servers.
  • An optional Listen button plays the correct pronunciation using text-to-speech, in case you want to hear it first.
  • The words are drawn from English Finders’ own dictionary, filtered to the CEFR level you chose (or drawn from any level if you leave the filter open).
  • Pronunciation Practice is free to play, though it needs microphone access and a browser with built-in speech recognition — Chrome or Edge on desktop or Android currently support it best.

Benefits of Pronunciation Practice

Every other tool in English Finders’ Practice hub tests reading, listening, or word knowledge; Pronunciation Practice is the only one that tests speaking, which is easy to neglect when studying alone. Because scoring happens entirely in your browser rather than on a server, there’s no recording uploaded or stored anywhere — you get instant feedback with nothing leaving your device. Drawing from a dictionary of over 64,000 words across all six CEFR levels, it gives you a genuinely large pool of words to practise saying out loud, not just a short fixed list.

Tips for Pronunciation Practice

  • Say the word clearly and at a normal pace — speaking too quietly or too fast can trip up speech recognition even when your pronunciation is fine.
  • Use a quiet room if you can; background noise is a common cause of a missed match that has nothing to do with your pronunciation.
  • Tap Listen before you try a word you don’t recognise, so you’re practising against the correct sound rather than guessing.
  • If your browser says speech recognition isn’t supported, try Chrome or Edge, ideally on desktop or Android.
  • Start with a CEFR level close to your own stage, since higher levels bring longer, less familiar words that are naturally harder to pronounce.

Who Can Play Pronunciation Practice?

Pronunciation Practice suits any English learner who wants speaking practice without needing a conversation partner or a teacher listening in. Because it works entirely through your device’s own microphone and browser, it’s a low-pressure way to build confidence saying words out loud before using them in conversation. Its coverage of all six CEFR levels makes it useful for beginners practising simple, common words and advanced learners working through longer or less familiar vocabulary, including anyone preparing for the speaking sections of exams like IELTS or Cambridge.
