Free placement test

English Level Test

Find your CEFR level (A1–C2) in grammar, vocabulary and reading. Questions get harder as you go, and the test ends when it finds your level.

  • Usually 15–35 questions, no time limit
  • Grammar, vocabulary and reading
  • Free — no account needed to take it

Answer without a dictionary. If you don't know an answer, choose the one you think is most likely — a guess tells the test more than stopping.

Not sure what your English level is? This free English level test estimates your CEFR level in three skills, grammar, vocabulary and reading, and gives you an overall level from Pre-A1 to C2. It adapts to your answers, so most people finish in 15 to 35 questions, with no time limit and no sign-up.

What Is the English Level Test?

The English Level Test is a free placement test from English Finders. Instead of giving everyone the same fixed paper, it starts at A1 and climbs through the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2), and stops each skill at the point where your answers show you have reached your limit.

Every question has four options. Grammar questions ask you to complete a sentence, vocabulary questions show a word and ask which of four definitions matches it, and reading questions give you a short passage with a question about it. Questions are drawn at random from a bank of items spread evenly across all six levels.

How to Take the English Level Test

  1. Press Start the test. There is nothing to download and no account to create.
  2. Answer each question by choosing one of the four options. A progress bar shows how far up the A1 to C2 scale you have climbed.
  3. Keep going. Grammar, vocabulary and reading questions are mixed together, so you never sit through a long block of one type.
  4. When all three skills have found their level, the test ends by itself and shows your result.

How Your CEFR Level Is Calculated

The test works through the levels one at a time. At each level, every skill keeps getting questions until you have either two right answers (you pass that level) or two wrong answers (you do not). This best-of-three rule means one slip will not drop you a level, and one lucky guess will not lift you up one.

A skill stops at the first level it does not pass. Its result is the highest level you passed, or Pre-A1 if A1 was not passed. Your overall level is the middle (median) of your three skill levels, so one unusually strong or weak skill cannot pull the overall result too far. That is also why the length varies: the test can end after as few as 6 questions, and a learner who answers everything correctly sees 36.

What Your Result Shows

  • Your overall CEFR level, with a short description of what learners at that level can usually do.
  • A separate level for grammar, vocabulary and reading, so you can see which skill is ahead and which needs work.
  • How many questions you answered correctly.
  • A link to the English Finders course for your level, from A1 to C2 (a Pre-A1 result points to the A1 course).

If you are logged in, your result is saved to your account automatically. If you take the test without an account, you can still keep it: create a free account or log in on the same device within 30 days and the result is attached to your account.

English Level Test Rules

  • There is no time limit, but a test left unfinished for more than two hours expires and has to be started again.
  • Every question has exactly one correct answer out of four.
  • You do not see whether each answer was right or wrong during the test. You get your full result at the end, because this is a test, not a practice drill.
  • Answers are checked on the server and the correct answers are never sent to your browser, so they cannot be read from the page.

Benefits of Knowing Your English Level

  • Choose the right materials. Study that is too easy wastes time, and study that is too hard is discouraging. Your level tells you where to start.
  • See your skill profile. Separate grammar, vocabulary and reading levels show exactly where to focus.
  • Track progress. Retake the test after a few weeks of study and compare the result.
  • Speak the common language of levels. CEFR levels are used by course books, schools and exams around the world, so knowing yours makes it easier to pick courses and set goals.

Tips for an Accurate Result

  • Answer without a dictionary or translator. The aim is to measure what you know now.
  • If you are unsure, choose the answer you think is most likely instead of stopping. A guess tells the test more than an unanswered question.
  • Take the test in one sitting, somewhere quiet.
  • Read each reading passage fully before you look at the options.

Who Is This Test For?

The test suits anyone who wants a quick, honest estimate of their English: beginners checking whether they are ready to move past A1, intermediate learners deciding between B1 and B2 materials, advanced learners confirming a C1 or C2 level, and teachers who want a simple starting point for a new class. Because it measures three skills separately, it is also useful for spotting an uneven profile, such as strong reading but weaker grammar.

Once you know your level, practise your weaker skills with the free English Finders practice tools, such as the Grammar Quiz, Vocabulary Quiz and Reading Quiz, each of which lets you choose a CEFR level.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the English level test take?

There is no time limit. Most people answer between 15 and 35 questions. The test stops each skill once it finds your level, so it can end after as few as 6 questions, and a learner who answers everything correctly sees 36.

Is the English level test free?

Yes. Taking the test and seeing your result is completely free, and you do not need an account to take it. A free account is only needed if you want to keep your result.

How does the test work out my CEFR level?

It climbs from A1 to C2. At each level, each skill needs two right answers to pass or two wrong answers to stop. Each skill’s level is the highest one you passed, and your overall level is the middle of your grammar, vocabulary and reading levels.

Is this an official English certificate?

No. It is a free estimate from a short test, not an official qualification or certificate. If you need an official result, for example for university or immigration, you will need a recognised exam such as IELTS or a Cambridge English exam.

Can I take the English level test more than once?

Yes. Questions are picked at random from a bank of 576, so a retake gives you a largely different set of questions. Retaking after a few weeks of practice is a good way to measure your progress.
