Print vocabulary flashcards with the word on one side and a plain-English meaning on the other. Choose a level, or paste your own list, and the cards are ready: no copying definitions out of a dictionary.
How the Cards Work
Each card is a strip across the page. The word and its part of speech sit on the left; the meaning, and an example sentence if you want one, sit on the right. Cut along the dashed lines, fold each strip along the dotted line in the middle, and you have a two-sided card. A dab of glue keeps it closed, and printing on thin card or laminating makes a set that lasts all year. Because the cards fold, there’s no need to print double-sided.
How to Make a Set
- Choose a CEFR level and, if you like, one word type, or type your own words.
- Choose how many cards you need, from 8 to 40.
- Untick the example sentence if you want shorter cards.
- Press Make my sheet, then Print / save as PDF.
Games and Activities With Flashcards
| Activity | How it works |
|---|---|
| Self-test | Look at the word, say the meaning, then turn the card over to check. |
| Partner quiz | One student reads the meaning; the other has to say the word. |
| Word-type sort | Students sort the cards into nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. |
| Sentence challenge | Draw a card and make a sentence with the word; the example on the back is a model. |
| Three piles | Sort cards into “know it”, “nearly” and “not yet”, and review the “not yet” pile most often. |
Prefer to review on screen? A free English Finders account includes Word review in My Account, which brings each word back after a few days, then after longer gaps, until it sticks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the flashcard maker free?
Yes. Anyone can make and print cards, without an account. Pro members can print them without the English Finders name and footer.
How many flashcards fit on a page?
About six on an A4 page, depending on how long the meanings and examples are. Each card runs across the width of the page so it can be folded in half.
Do I need to print double-sided?
No. The word and the meaning are side by side on one strip; you fold the strip so they end up back to back.
Can I make flashcards from my own word list?
Yes, up to 40 words. Words we have a learner meaning for get one on the back; for any we don’t, the back is left blank for you or your students to fill in, and the page tells you which words they are.
Which levels are the words from?
From A1 to C2, using the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). You can keep to one word type, such as verbs, too.
