Sentence Builder
Put the shuffled words back into the correct order. Filter by level to practise sentence structure at your own stage.
Sentence Builder gives you a sentence’s words shuffled out of order and asks you to tap them back into place — building the sentence yourself, rather than picking an answer from a list.
What Is Sentence Builder?
Sentence Builder is English Finders’ only Writing-category tool, and mechanically different from every other Practice tool: instead of choosing between options, you reconstruct a sentence by tapping its shuffled words into the correct order. It draws from English Finders’ own hand-written bank of seventy-two sentences, twelve at each CEFR level from A1 to C2, spanning nine sentence-structure topics.
How to Play Sentence Builder
- Choose a CEFR level from the dropdown, or leave it on “Any level” to mix levels.
- Look at the shuffled words shown for the round.
- Tap the words, in order, to build what you think is the correct sentence.
- Use Reset if you want to start the sentence over before checking it.
- Tap Check to submit your order — the quiz tells you straight away if it’s correct, and shows the correct sentence with an explanation either way.
- Keep going until you reach the end of the ten-sentence session, then start a new one if you like.
Sentence Builder Rules
- Each session is ten sentences long.
- Every round gives you the sentence’s exact words, shuffled, with nothing added or removed.
- You get one submission per sentence — once you tap Check, that round is scored and locked in.
- After you answer, Sentence Builder shows the correct sentence and an explanation of the word-order rule, whether you got it right or not.
- The sentence bank is small and hand-written rather than pulled from a dictionary, so once you’ve seen every sentence at a level, the quiz starts repeating them rather than ending the session early.
- Sentence Builder is free to play, with no account or sign-up required.
Benefits of Playing Sentence Builder
Every other tool in English Finders’ Practice hub asks you to recognise or select a correct answer; Sentence Builder is the only one that asks you to construct one, which is a closer match to the skill of actually writing in English. Because every round comes with an explanation of the underlying word-order rule — subject-verb-object, adverb placement, question inversion, and more advanced patterns like cleft sentences and subjunctive inversion at higher levels — it works as a compact grammar lesson as much as a game. Spanning all six CEFR levels, it starts with simple statements and works up to word-order patterns that trip up even confident intermediate learners.
Tips for Sentence Builder
- Look for the verb first — most English sentences follow subject-verb-object, so placing the verb correctly usually anchors the rest.
- Watch for capitalisation and punctuation on the shuffled words — a capital letter or a full stop is often a clue to where a word belongs.
- Use Reset freely; there’s no penalty for rearranging before you tap Check.
- Start with a CEFR level close to your own stage, since higher levels introduce trickier structures like inversion and cleft sentences.
- Read the explanation even when you get it right, since the underlying rule often applies beyond that one sentence.
Who Can Play Sentence Builder?
Sentence Builder suits any English learner who wants to practise producing correct sentence structure, not just recognising it. Because it’s the plugin’s only construction-based tool, it pairs well with the more recognition-based tools like Grammar Quiz and Error Correction for a rounded grammar routine. Its spread across all six CEFR levels makes it useful for beginners learning basic word order and advanced learners working on structures like inversion and subjunctive clauses, including anyone preparing for writing-focused exam sections in IELTS or Cambridge.
