Pick a level, tick the exercises you want and print. The words arrive with simple meanings and example sentences written for learners, so there is nothing to look up or type, and the answer key is always on its own page at the end.
What Goes on the Worksheet
This vocabulary worksheet generator can build up to five exercises from the same set of words. Use all five for a full lesson’s worth of practice, or just one or two for a quick warm-up.
| Exercise | What students do | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Match the meaning | Write the letter of the right meaning next to each word | Checking that new words are understood |
| Complete the sentences | Fill the gap in each example sentence, using the words in the box | Seeing how a word is used in context |
| Unscramble the words | Put mixed-up letters back in order, with the meaning as a clue | Spelling and recognising word shapes |
| Missing letters | Fill in the blanked letters; the first letter is always shown | Spelling, especially at lower levels |
| Write your own sentences | Use each word in a sentence of their own (up to 8 words) | Moving from knowing a word to using it |
Matching uses up to 15 words. If you choose more, the extra words still appear in the other exercises.
Where the Words Come From
Choose a CEFR level and the generator picks words from our CEFR word lists, each with an everyday meaning and an example sentence. There are 6,890 words to draw from at the moment: 941 at A1, 1,097 at A2, 1,886 at B1, 2,129 at B2, 388 at C1 and 449 at C2. You can keep to nouns, verbs, adjectives or adverbs, and words that don’t belong on a classroom sheet are left out of random sets.
Teaching a fixed list from your coursebook? Type or paste up to 40 words into the box instead. If we don’t have a learner meaning for one of them, it still appears in the spelling exercises, and the sheet tells you which words those were.
How to Make a Worksheet
- Choose the CEFR level and, if you like, one word type.
- Choose how many words you want, from 6 to 20.
- Tick the exercises to include.
- Add a title such as “Unit 4: Food” (optional).
- Press Make my sheet. The worksheet opens in a new tab.
- Press Print / save as PDF.
Every sheet has its own link. Bookmark it and you can print exactly the same worksheet next term. New version keeps your settings but picks a fresh set of words, which is handy for a retest.
Ways to Use It in Class
- Before a reading text: paste in the key words from the text and use the matching exercise as a pre-reading task.
- Homework: students do the sheet at home, then mark each other’s work in class with the answer key.
- End-of-unit review: a matching and gap-fill sheet with the unit’s words makes a short, low-stress test.
- Mixed-level groups: print the same exercises at two levels, for example A2 and B1, so everyone works on the same kind of task.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the worksheet generator free?
Yes. It is free for everyone, and you don’t need an account. Pro members can also print sheets without the English Finders name and footer.
Does every worksheet come with an answer key?
Yes. The key is on its own page at the end, so you can print the exercises on their own and keep the answers for yourself. “Write your own sentences” has no fixed answers, so it isn’t in the key.
Can I use my own word list?
Yes. Type or paste up to 40 words or short phrases, one per line or separated by commas, and leave the level choice as it is. Words we have a learner meaning for are used in every exercise.
How do I save the worksheet as a PDF?
Press “Print / save as PDF” on the sheet, then choose “Save as PDF” as the printer in your browser’s print window. The buttons and notes you see on screen are left off the printout.
What do the CEFR levels mean?
The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) describes six levels, from A1 for beginners to C2 for very advanced users. If you aren’t sure of your students’ level, they can take the free English Level Test.
