Every Saturday morning, Ana goes to the with her . Ana is fourteen. Her grandfather is seventy-two, but he walks very fast.
The market is in the old square. There are more than fifty tables. People sell fruit, , bread, fish, cheese and flowers. It is and busy, and it smells good.
Grandfather knows everyone. “Good morning, Maria!” he says to the bread woman. “Hello, Sam!” he says to the fish man. Everyone smiles at him.
“Why do you come here?” Ana asks. “The supermarket is near our house.”
“The supermarket is easy,” he says. “But here, I know the people. And look at these tomatoes. They are red and . At the supermarket, the tomatoes are , but they are not good.”
They buy tomatoes, onions, potatoes and a big piece of cheese. Then Grandfather stops at a table with old books. “And now,” he says, “the special plan.”
He buys a small, old cookbook. “This is for you,” he says. “My mother had this book. Next Saturday, you cook for the family.”
Ana looks at the book. “But I can’t cook!”
“Not yet,” he says. “But you can read. And I can help.”
The next Saturday, Ana makes tomato soup for six people. It is not , but everyone eats it all.
