What is synecdoche in simple words?

Synecdoche is using a part of something to mean the whole thing, or the whole to mean a part. When a coach says “I need fresh legs,” she means fresh players, not just their legs.

How do you pronounce synecdoche?

Say sih-NEK-duh-kee, with the stress on the second syllable: /sɪˈnek.də.ki/. The ending sounds like “key,” not like “dock.” It has four syllables.

What are common examples of synecdoche?

“All hands on deck” (sailors), “a new set of wheels” (a car), “mouths to feed” (people), “our daily bread” (food) and “Brazil won the match” (the Brazilian team) are all common examples.

What is the difference between synecdoche and metonymy?

Synecdoche uses a real part of the thing, like “wheels” for a car. Metonymy uses something closely linked but not part of it, like “the press” for journalists. Many scholars class synecdoche as a type of metonymy.

Is “the law” a synecdoche?

Yes, in a sentence like “The law arrived in two cars,” it is usually called synecdoche: the whole legal system stands for a few police officers. This whole-for-part direction is less common than part-for-whole.

Why do writers use synecdoche?

It points the reader at the part that matters. “Hired hands” stresses the work people do, while “fresh faces” stresses that they are new. The part chosen shows what the writer wants you to notice.
