What is the bandwagon fallacy in simple words?

The bandwagon fallacy is the mistake of believing something is true, good or right just because many people believe it or do it. Popularity alone does not prove that a claim is correct.

What is an example of the bandwagon fallacy?

“Millions of people use this diet app, so it must be healthy.” The number of users tells us the app is popular, not that its advice is safe or effective.

What does “jump on the bandwagon” mean?

To jump on the bandwagon means to join something because it has suddenly become popular. For example: “When the team started winning, everyone jumped on the bandwagon and bought a shirt.”

What are other names for the bandwagon fallacy?

It is also called the appeal to popularity, the appeal to the masses or, in Latin, argumentum ad populum, which means “argument to the people.”

Is popularity ever a good reason?

Sometimes. If the question is about popularity itself, such as which song was streamed most, popularity is the answer. In language, common usage also matters, because words mean what most speakers use them to mean.

What is the difference between the bandwagon fallacy and appeal to authority?

The bandwagon fallacy relies on what many ordinary people believe. An appeal to authority relies on what one expert or famous person says. Both replace real evidence with who believes the claim.
