Second Conditional — If I Had…

What would you do if you won the lottery tomorrow?

Notice

  • If I had more free time, I would learn the guitar.
  • If I were you, I wouldn’t wait so long.
  • She would travel more if she had the money.

Rule

The Second Conditional (If + past simple, would + base verb) talks about imaginary or unlikely present/future situations — dreams, hopes, and hypothetical advice. It is NOT about the past; the past-tense verb here signals distance from reality, not past time.

With be, we often use were for all subjects (If I were you…), especially for advice.
