Linking Words for Addition and Reason
How do you add an extra point or a result smoothly?
Notice
- The hotel was expensive. Moreover, the service was poor.
- I was tired, so I went to bed early.
- The plan failed because no one prepared properly.
Rule
Moreover/furthermore/in addition add an extra point. So/therefore show a result. Because/since/as give a reason. Together with the contrast words from the last lesson, these are the basic toolkit for a short, well-linked opinion paragraph.
Practice
- The film was long. ___ , it was boring. (extra point)
Answer: Moreover/Furthermore - It was raining, ___ we stayed inside. (result)
Answer: so - We cancelled the trip ___ the weather was bad. (reason)
Answer: because - She was late, ___ she missed the train. (result)
Answer: so/therefore - He passed the exam ___ he studied every day. (reason)
Answer: because/as/since
