Question Tags — Checking and Confirming
It’s a nice day, isn’t it? Notice the little question at the end?
Notice
- You’re coming to the party, aren’t you?
- She doesn’t like coffee, does she?
- They arrived late, didn’t they?
Rule
A question tag checks information or invites agreement. Rule: positive sentence → negative tag; negative sentence → positive tag. The tag matches the main verb’s tense/auxiliary (is/isn’t, does/doesn’t, did/didn’t).
Practice
- It’s a lovely day, ___ ?
Answer: isn’t it - You don’t smoke, ___ ?
Answer: do you - She can swim, ___ ?
Answer: can’t she - They went home early, ___ ?
Answer: didn’t they - He isn’t coming, ___ ?
Answer: is he
