The order in which you reveal information changes how a sentence feels — suspenseful and formal, or natural and relaxed.
Notice
- Periodic sentence (main point delayed to the end): “Despite the rain, the delays, and the missed connection, we arrived on time.”
- Loose sentence (main point first, details added after): “We arrived on time, despite the rain, the delays, and the missed connection.”
Rule
Rule: periodic sentences build suspense by withholding the main clause until the end — they feel more formal, literary, or dramatic. Loose sentences state the main idea immediately and add detail afterward — they feel more natural, conversational, and easier to follow. Skilled writers mix both for rhythm.
Practice
- Rewrite as a periodic sentence: “She finally accepted the offer, after weeks of doubt, countless conversations, and one sleepless night.”
Answer: “After weeks of doubt, countless conversations, and one sleepless night, she finally accepted the offer.” - Which type of sentence — periodic or loose — is easier for a listener to follow in real-time speech, and why?
Answer: Loose — because the main point comes first, so the listener immediately grasps the core message before the extra detail. - Why might a formal speech open with a periodic sentence?
Answer: To build anticipation and make the eventual main point land with more weight and drama.
