Can-Do Task: edit a wordy, choppy paragraph into concise, flowing C2-level prose.

Notice

  • Task: rewrite this paragraph, cutting redundancy, varying sentence length, and improving cohesion: “The meeting was held. It was about the new plan. The new plan was for the future. Each and every person attended the meeting. The past history of the company was discussed. It was absolutely essential that everyone understood.”

Rule

Self-check: did you cut at least two redundant phrases, combine some short sentences for better flow, and add at least one clear link between ideas?

Practice

  1. Model rewrite:
Answer: Example: “The meeting addressed the company’s future plans. Every employee attended, since it was essential that everyone understood the direction ahead — informed, in part, by the company’s history.”
  2. Which redundant phrases did you cut?
Answer: Example: “each and every” → “every”; “past history” → “history”; “absolutely essential” → “essential.”
  3. How did you improve the flow between ideas?
Answer: Example: combined short, choppy sentences into longer ones connected with “since” and “in part, by,” instead of leaving them as disconnected statements.
