Practice

  1. 1) Which is more formal: “Could you send the documents?” or “I would be most grateful if you could provide the documents”?
    Answer: The second — longer, more indirect, and more formal vocabulary/structure.
  2. 2) Is register-shifting during the day a sign of inconsistency or of skill?
    Answer: Skill — it shows sensitivity to different audiences and contexts.
  3. 3) What is wrong with texting a close friend “I would be delighted to accompany you”?
    Answer: It is far too formal for the casual relationship, and may come across as sarcastic or odd.
  4. 4) Rewrite casually for a colleague-friend: “I regret to inform you I cannot attend.”
    Answer: Example: “Can’t make it, sorry!”
  5. 5) What generally makes language sound more casual (structure/vocabulary)?
    Answer: Shorter sentences, contractions, everyday vocabulary, and more direct phrasing.
