Past continuous (was/were + -ing) for the background of a story. Going to for plans, will for predictions/decisions, first conditional for real future possibilities. Present perfect for life experience (ever/never/just/already/yet). Comparatives/superlatives for comparing. Modals (must/have to, should, can/could) for obligation, advice, and permission. Quantifiers (much/many/a few/a little/too much/too many/enough). Phrasal verbs and adverbs of manner for daily routines. Relative clauses (who/which/that/where). Reported speech (said/told). Gerunds/infinitives after common verbs.
