Can you describe your favorite place, or someone you admire, in a way that really paints a picture for the listener?

“My grandmother, who is 80 years old, still gardens every day.” — “The city where I grew up is very quiet.” — “It’s a small town that has a beautiful old market.”

Rule

Good descriptions combine relative clauses (who/which/that) with adjectives, comparisons, and specific details (age, appearance, personality, location). Where is another useful relative word, used for places: “the city where I was born,” “a restaurant where they serve great pizza.”

Practice

  1. Complete: “This is the town ______ I was born.” Answer: where
  2. Combine: “He’s my best friend.” + “He always makes me laugh.” Answer: He’s my best friend who always makes me laugh.
  3. Describe a place using “where”: “a café ______…” Answer: (open) e.g. where I like to study
  4. Describe a person: add a relative clause to “My sister is a teacher.” Answer: (open) e.g. My sister, who is very patient, is a teacher.
  5. Combine: “This is the park.” + “We used to play here.” Answer: This is the park where we used to play.
