“It’s a nice day, isn’t it?” That little question at the end isn’t really asking for new information — it’s inviting the other person to agree with you.

Rule

Question tags are short questions added to the end of a statement, used to check information or invite agreement. The rule: positive statement + negative tag, negative statement + positive tag. The tag repeats the statement’s auxiliary verb (is/are, do/does, can, etc.).

  2. She isn’t home, ______ she? Answer: is
  3. They can speak French, ______ they? Answer: can’t
  4. He works here, ______ he? Answer: doesn’t
