You want to invite a friend to a weekend trip. How do you write a short, friendly email that sounds natural, not like a formal business letter?
Notice
“Hi Sam, How are you? I’m planning a weekend trip to the coast and I’d love for you to join! Let me know if you’re free. Talk soon, Alex.”
Rule
Informal emails follow a simple structure: a friendly greeting (Hi/Hey + name), a short opening question or comment, the main message in simple, direct sentences, and a casual closing (Talk soon, See you, Take care) plus your name. Contractions (I’m, I’d, you’re) are normal and expected in informal writing.
Practice
- Choose the informal greeting: “Dear Sir” or “Hi Sam.” Answer: Hi Sam
- Choose the informal closing: “Yours sincerely” or “Talk soon.” Answer: Talk soon
- Rewrite formally as informal: “I am writing to invite you.” Answer: I’d love for you to come! / I wanted to invite you.
- Complete: “Let me ______ if you’re free this weekend.” Answer: know
- Write one informal opening line inviting a friend somewhere. Answer: (open)
