Rule

Given that / in view of introduce a reason or fact that informs the following statement (more formal than ‘because’ or ‘since’). Provided that / assuming that introduce conditions, similar to ‘if’, but more formal and often implying a stricter or more deliberate condition.

Practice

  1. Combine with ‘given that’: ‘The weather is bad. We should postpone the trip.’
    Answer: Given that the weather is bad, we should postpone the trip.
  2. Combine with ‘provided that’: ‘You can borrow the car. You return it by 6pm.’
    Answer: You can borrow the car, provided that you return it by 6pm.
  3. Rewrite formally: ‘Because of the recent problems, the policy is being reviewed.’
    Answer: In view of the recent problems, the policy is being reviewed.
  4. Rewrite with ‘assuming that’: ‘If the data is accurate, our forecast should hold.’
    Answer: Assuming that the data is accurate, our forecast should hold.
