Rule

Whereas and while introduce a formal contrast between two clauses (more formal/precise than ‘but’). ‘Whereas’ is used for factual contrasts (especially data/comparisons); ‘while’ can express both factual contrast and a concession (acknowledging a point before disagreeing).

Practice

  1. Combine with ‘whereas’: ‘Costs increased in Q1. Costs decreased in Q2.’
Answer: Costs increased in Q1, whereas they decreased in Q2.
  2. Combine with ‘while’ (concession): ‘The idea is interesting. It is not practical.’
Answer: While the idea is interesting, it is not practical.
  3. Rewrite formally: ‘Some people like the city, but others prefer the countryside.’
Answer: Some people like the city, whereas others prefer the countryside.
  4. What’s the key difference in use between ‘whereas’ and ‘while’ here?
Answer: ‘Whereas’ is used strictly for contrast; ‘while’ can express contrast or a concession before a counterpoint.
