Recognising Register: Formal, Neutral, Informal
Same meaning, three registers: “Could you possibly assist me?” / “Can you help me?” / “Give me a hand?”
Notice
- Formal: I would be grateful if you could assist me with this matter.
- Neutral: Can you help me with this?
- Informal: Give me a hand with this, would you?
- Formal: We regret to inform you that your application was unsuccessful.
- Informal: Sorry, you didn’t get the job.
Rule
Register is the level of formality appropriate to a context — shaped by vocabulary choice (assist vs help vs give a hand), sentence structure (passive/nominalised vs direct), and directness. Recognising register at a glance (in a text, email, or conversation) is a core C1 skill, distinct from just knowing more vocabulary.
Practice
- Identify the register: ‘I would be grateful if you could confirm receipt.’
Answer: Formal. - Identify the register: ‘Got your message, thanks!’
Answer: Informal. - Rewrite in a neutral register: ‘I would be most obliged if you would kindly respond.’
Answer: Please could you reply? - What three factors typically signal formality level?
Answer: Vocabulary choice, sentence structure (passive/nominalisation vs direct), and directness/politeness markers.
