Rule
Mixed review: inversion, subjunctive, nominalisation, modal perfects, and a first taste of connotation.
Practice
- 1) Rewrite with inversion: “She had never lied to him before.”
Answer: “Never had she lied to him before.” - 2) Nominalise: “They analysed the data carefully, which revealed a clear trend.”
Answer: “Their careful analysis of the data revealed a clear trend.” - 3) Which has a more positive connotation — “ambitious” or “pushy”?
Answer: “Ambitious” — positive; “pushy” describes similar behaviour negatively. - 4) Modal perfect: “He’s not answering — he ___ (might) be asleep.”
Answer: “…he might be asleep.” (present speculation, not modal perfect — note the contrast with “might have been asleep” for the past) - 5) Formal subjunctive: “The judge recommended that the fine ___ (be) increased.”
Answer: “…that the fine be increased.”
