Rule
Mixed review: fronting, periodic vs loose sentences, and stylistic inversion.
Practice
- 1) Front the adverbial: “She had never felt so alive in that moment.”
Answer: “In that moment, she had never felt so alive.” - 2) Is “Despite everything, we succeeded” periodic or loose?
Answer: Periodic — the main clause (“we succeeded”) comes after the introductory detail. - 3) Rewrite with stylistic inversion: “The days of easy profit are gone.”
Answer: “Gone are the days of easy profit.” - 4) Why might a writer mix periodic and loose sentences in the same paragraph?
Answer: To create rhythm and variety, avoiding a monotonous or predictable sentence pattern. - 5) Is stylistic inversion typical of casual text messages?
Answer: No — it belongs to formal, literary, or rhetorical registers, not casual everyday texting.
