Can-Do Task: A Cautiously Worded Opinion
Task: write about a topic you’re not 100% certain about, using hedging language throughout.
Notice
- Example: It is often said that remote work improves productivity, and this tends to be true for many people. However, it seems to depend a lot on the individual. I would say it works better for some jobs than others.
Rule
Your task: Write 5–7 sentences giving an opinion on a topic you’re genuinely uncertain about. Use at least four different hedging structures from this module (tend to, seem to, it is said that, I would say, etc.).
Practice
- Planning line: what topic are you unsure about?
Answer: Personal answer — e.g. a trend, a claim, a prediction. - Draft one sentence using “it is said that”.
Answer: Personal answer, e.g. ‘It is said that this trend will continue.’
Connect
Test your accuracy with hedging language before writing.
CEFR: Spoken Production — present views with appropriate nuance and caution.
