The Third Conditional — Unreal Past

Is there something you would have done differently, if only you’d known?

Notice

  • If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
  • If she hadn’t missed the train, she would have arrived on time.
  • We would have gone to the party if we had been invited.

The Third Conditional (If + past perfect, would have + past participle) talks about an unreal past — an imaginary result of something that did NOT actually happen. It’s used for regrets, criticism, and reflecting on past decisions.
