Can-Do Task: Describing a Process Formally
Task: describe a process or system using a full range of passive forms.
Notice
- Example: First, the raw materials are collected. Then they are processed and checked for quality before being packaged.
- Example: Applications are reviewed by a committee. Once a decision has been made, candidates are contacted by email.
Rule
Your task: Choose a process you know well (how a product is made, how an application is processed, how an event is organised) and describe it in 6–8 sentences. Use at least four different passive forms from this module: simple passive, passive with a modal, passive infinitive or gerund, and passive perfect or continuous.
Practice
- Planning line: which process will you describe?
Answer: Personal answer — e.g. how coffee is made, how a visa is processed. - Draft your opening sentence using the simple passive.
Answer: Personal answer, e.g. ‘The beans are harvested by hand.’
