Quick Review: Reported Speech, Deduction & Relative Clauses
Two more B1 tools you will lean on heavily at B2.
Notice
- She told me she had finished the project. (reported statement)
- He might have missed the bus. (deduction)
- The woman whose car broke down took the bus. (relative clause)
Rule
Reported speech passes on what someone said. Deduction modals (must/might/can’t have) express confidence about a guess. Relative clauses add detail about a person, place, or thing.
Practice
- “I am tired,” she said. → She said ___ .
Answer: she was tired - The ground is wet — it ___ have rained.
Answer: must - That’s the man ___ car was stolen.
Answer: whose - “Close the door,” she said. → She told me ___ .
Answer: to close the door - He ___ have forgotten, he never forgets. (confident negative)
Answer: can’t
