Reflecting on Turning Points

Real people telling real stories of “what could have been” — notice the pattern?

Notice

  • If I hadn’t taken that job, I wouldn’t have met my business partner.
  • Looking back, I wish I had travelled more when I was younger.
  • If only we’d checked the weather, we wouldn’t have got soaked.

Rule

Combine the Third Conditional and wish/if only in the same reflection to sound natural: state what happened, then explore the alternative. This pattern appears constantly in interviews, memoirs, and everyday storytelling about turning points.

Practice

  1. Combine: “I didn’t apply. I regret it.” (wish)
Answer: I wish I had applied.
  2. Combine: “I missed the bus. I was late.” (3rd conditional)
Answer: If I hadn’t missed the bus, I wouldn’t have been late.
  3. “Looking back, I ___ I had saved more money.”
    Answer: wish
  4. If she ___ (not/change) careers, she wouldn’t be so happy now.
    Answer: hadn’t changed
  5. “If only I ___ (listen) to my parents’ advice.”
    Answer: had listened
