Can-Do Task: A Detailed Description Using Participle Clauses
Task: describe a person, place, or event using participle clauses and reduced relative clauses to add detail efficiently.
Notice
- Example: Walking into the room, I noticed a painting hanging on the wall, clearly inspired by classic art. Surrounded by bookshelves, the study felt calm and quiet.
Rule
Your task: Write 5–7 sentences describing a person, place, or event. Use at least three participle clauses or reduced relative clauses to add detail without long relative clauses.
Practice
- Planning line: what will you describe?
Answer: Personal answer — e.g. a room, a city, a memorable event. - Draft one sentence using a present participle clause.
Answer: Personal answer, e.g. ‘Standing by the window, I watched the sunset.’
