Reporting Insistence, Denial and Admission
“I didn’t take the money,” he said. → He denied taking the money.
Notice
- He denied taking the money.
- She admitted making a mistake.
- They insisted on paying for dinner.
- He insisted that he was innocent.
Rule
Deny, admit + gerund report something someone denies or confesses. Insist can take on + gerund (insisting on an action) or that + clause (insisting a fact is true).
Practice
- Report: ‘I never said that!’ (deny)
Answer: He denied saying that. - Report: ‘OK, it was my fault.’ (admit)
Answer: She admitted it was her fault. / She admitted that it was her fault. - Report: ‘You must let me help.’ (insist on)
Answer: She insisted on helping. - Correct the error: ‘He denied to break the window.’
Answer: He denied breaking the window.
