Reporting Warnings and Promises
“Don’t touch the wire!” → She warned me not to touch the wire.
Notice
- She warned me not to touch the wire.
- He promised to call as soon as he arrived.
- They warned us that the road was closed.
- She promised not to be late again.
Rule
Warn and promise commonly take an object + (not) to-infinitive, or a that-clause for warnings about facts. Negative reported instructions use not to + base verb.
Practice
- Report: ‘Don’t forget your passport,’ she said to him. (warn)
Answer: She warned him not to forget his passport. - Report: ‘I’ll finish the report by Friday,’ he said. (promise)
Answer: He promised to finish the report by Friday. - Report: ‘Watch out, the floor is wet.’ (warn + that-clause)
Answer: She warned us that the floor was wet. - Correct the error: ‘He promised don’t tell anyone.’
Answer: He promised not to tell anyone.
