Rule

Contrast: however, nevertheless, on the other hand, despite/in spite of (+ noun/gerund). Addition: moreover, furthermore, in addition, additionally. These discourse markers organise formal writing and make the logical relationship between ideas explicit — essential for a coherent discussion essay.

Practice

  1. Complete: ‘_____ the high price, the product sold out quickly.’ (despite)
    Answer: Despite
  2. Combine with ‘moreover’: ‘The plan saves money. It also saves time.’
    Answer: The plan saves money. Moreover, it saves time.
  3. Combine with ‘however’: ‘The idea sounds good. It may be hard to implement.’
    Answer: The idea sounds good. However, it may be hard to implement.
  4. Correct the error: ‘Despite of the rain, we went out.’
    Answer: Despite the rain, we went out. / In spite of the rain, we went out.
