Spelling Your Name Aloud

Hook: In English-speaking countries, people are asked to spell their name constantly — on the phone, at a hotel, at a doctor’s office. This is one of the very first real conversations you’ll have in English.

Notice: “My name is Ana. That’s A-N-A.”   “My name is Michael. That’s M-I-C-H-A-E-L.”

The rule

To spell your name, say each letter separately using the sounds from the last lesson, then say the whole name again to confirm. Use “That’s…” or “It’s spelled…” before you spell it.

Practice

  1. Spell your own first name out loud, letter by letter.
  2. Complete: “My name is Sam. That’s S – A – ___.” (Answer: M)
  3. Which phrase introduces spelling? a) “I am from…” b) “That’s spelled…” c) “I like…” (Answer: b)
