Hook

What are you wearing today? Your friend is waiting for you at a busy station: “I’m wearing a red jacket and a black hat.” Clothes and colours help people find you, and they are useful when you shop too.

Notice

  • She’s wearing a red dress and black shoes.
  • He’s wearing blue jeans and a white T-shirt.
  • I like your green jacket!
  • These trousers are too long.
  • My favourite colour is purple.

What comes first: the colour or the clothes?

  • wear for clothes: I usually wear jeans. Today I’m wearing a suit.
  • Colour before the noun: a red shirt (not a shirt red).
  • Always plural: trousers, jeans, shorts, glasses → These jeans are new. Where are my glasses? For one: a pair of jeans.

Watch Out

  • ✗ a shirt blue → ✓ a blue shirt (colour first)
  • ✗ This jeans is new. → ✓ These jeans are new. (jeans is plural)
  • ✗ I’m carrying a red dress. → ✓ I’m wearing a red dress. (wear clothes)
  • ✗ blues shoes → ✓ blue shoes (colours are never plural)
