What Time Is It?

Hook

Your train leaves at 7:45. Your friend says “Let’s meet at half past six.” The doctor can see you “at a quarter to ten”. Telling the time comes up every single day, and English has two ways to do it: the clock way (half past six) and the digital way (six thirty).

Notice

  • A: What time is it? — B: It’s three o’clock. (3:00)
  • It’s half past three. (3:30)
  • It’s a quarter past three. / It’s a quarter to four. (3:15 / 3:45)
  • It’s ten past three. / It’s twenty to four. (3:10 / 3:40)
  • The film starts at eight thirty. (8:30)

When do we use past, and when do we use to? Look at the minutes.
