Imagine showing a friend a photo. How do you describe what people are wearing and doing in it?

Read this picture description:

“In this photo, a man is wearing a blue shirt and black trousers. He is standing next to a woman. She is wearing a red dress, and she is smiling. Two children are playing in the park behind them. It’s a sunny day.”

Rule

To describe a picture, combine:

  • Present continuous for actions: is standing, are playing, is smiling
  • Clothes & colors vocabulary: is wearing a blue shirt
  • Prepositions of place (from Module 4): next to, behind, in front of

Practice

  1. Complete: The man ___ (wear) a green hat. (Answer: is wearing)
  2. Complete: The children ___ (play) in the garden. (Answer: are playing)
  3. Combine: woman / stand / next to / the car (Answer: The woman is standing next to the car.)
  4. Write 2 sentences describing what someone near you is wearing right now. (Answer: e.g. She is wearing a yellow jacket. He is wearing black shoes.)
