Some and Any

Hook: “There is some milk in the fridge. There isn’t any bread.” Small words, used constantly.

Notice: “There are some chairs.” “There aren’t any chairs.” “Are there any chairs?” “There is some water.” “Is there any water?”

The rule

Use some in affirmative sentences. Use any in negative sentences and questions. Both can be used with plural countable nouns (some chairs / any chairs) and uncountable nouns (some water / any water).

  1. There are ___ books on the shelf. (Answer: some)
  2. There isn’t ___ milk in the fridge. (Answer: any)
  3. Is there ___ sugar? (Answer: any)
  4. I have ___ friends in this city. (Answer: some)
