Talking About Last Weekend

Hook

On Monday morning a colleague asks: “How was your weekend? What did you do?” Now you can answer properly: a short story in the past, in time order, with a little opinion at the end. This is one of the most useful A1 skills.

Notice

Read this short story:

  • Last weekend was great.
  • On Saturday morning, I went shopping with my sister. We bought some new shoes.
  • In the afternoon, we watched a film at home.
  • On Sunday, I visited my grandparents. We ate lunch together and talked for hours.
  • It was a relaxing weekend.

Find two regular verbs, two irregular verbs and three time expressions.

Rule

A good short past story:

  1. Start with a time and a general comment: Last weekend was fun.
  2. Tell the events in order with time words: On Saturday… First… Then… After that… In the evening…
  3. Use the right forms: was/were for descriptions and feelings; regular and irregular past verbs for actions.
  4. Join ideas with and, but, so, because.
  5. Finish with an opinion: It was a great day. I was very tired!

Asking: How was your weekend? · What did you do? · Where did you go? · Who did you go with? · Did you have a good time?

Watch Out

  • ✗ Last weekend I go to the beach. → ✓ Last weekend I went to the beach.
  • ✗ It was very fun. → ✓ It was really fun. / It was great fun.
  • ✗ Where you went? → ✓ Where did you go?
  • ✗ After I had lunch, then I slept. → ✓ After lunch, I slept. / I had lunch, then I slept.

Practice

  1. Complete: Last weekend ___ (be) fun.
  2. Complete: On Saturday, I ___ (go) to the market.
  3. Complete: We ___ (watch) a film together.
  4. Put in time order: (a) I went to bed (b) I had breakfast (c) I had dinner
  5. Ask about the weekend in three words.
  6. Ask where someone went.
  7. Join with so: “It was raining. We stayed at home.”
  8. Write an ending opinion sentence.
