Imagine you’re on holiday and want to send a short message to a friend. This is one of the most classic real-world A1 writing tasks.

Notice

Read this postcard:

“Dear Anna,

Hi! I’m having a great time in Rome. The weather is sunny and warm. Yesterday, I visited an old church and ate delicious pizza. Tomorrow, I’m going to see more of the city.

See you soon!
Love, Maria”

Rule

A simple postcard/message usually has:

  • a greeting (Dear ___, / Hi ___,)
  • where you are and how you feel (I’m having a great time in…)
  • something you did (past simple) and something you’ll do (going to / present continuous for future plans)
  • a closing (See you soon! / Love, / Best wishes,)

Practice

  1. What greeting can start a postcard? (Answer: Dear ___, / Hi ___,)
  2. Complete: The weather ___ (be) sunny. (Answer: is)
  3. Complete: Yesterday, I ___ (visit) a museum. (Answer: visited)
  4. Write a closing line for a postcard. (Answer: e.g. See you soon! / Love,)
  5. Write a short postcard (4–5 sentences) to a friend about an imaginary or real trip.
