How do you ask the price of something in a shop, and understand the answer? Numbers and money words come together here.

Notice

Look at these shopping expressions:

  • How much is this T-shirt? — It’s fifteen dollars.
  • How much are these shoes? — They’re forty dollars.
  • Do you have this in a different size?
  • I’ll take it. / I’ll take these.
  • That’s too expensive.
  • Do you accept cards?

Rule

Use How much is…? for one item (singular): How much is this bag?

Use How much are…? for more than one item (plural): How much are these socks?

Prices: $15 = fifteen dollars. $1.50 = one dollar fifty / a dollar fifty.

Practice

  1. Choose is/are: How much ___ this hat? (Answer: is)
  2. Choose is/are: How much ___ these jeans? (Answer: are)
  3. Say this price in words: $12 (Answer: twelve dollars)
  4. Say this price in words: $3.50 (Answer: three dollars fifty)
  5. What do you say to buy something? (Answer: I’ll take it.)
  6. What do you say if a price is too high? (Answer: That’s too expensive.)
  7. What do you ask if you want to pay by card? (Answer: Do you accept cards?)
  8. How much are these shoes? They ___ thirty dollars. (Answer: are / cost)
