Can-Do Task: Order Food & Make a Shopping List

Your Task

Show what you can DO with this module: (1) order food and drink in a café, (2) write a shopping list with the right quantities, and (3) ask about prices in a shop. Write all three parts, then say Part 1 out loud.

Before You Start

  1. Part 1, café role-play: write your side of the conversation below. Waiter: “Good afternoon! What would you like?” → You · Waiter: “Anything else?” → You · Waiter: “That’s eight dollars fifty.” → You.
  2. Part 2, shopping list: write 6–8 items for this week. Use numbers for countable nouns and some or a container for uncountable nouns (two apples, a bottle of milk, some rice).
  3. Part 3, prices: write three questions about the prices of things on your list with How much is / are…?, and imagine the answers.

Useful Language

  • Ordering: I’d like… · Could I have…, please? · No, that’s all, thanks. · Here you are. · Can I pay by card?
  • Quantities: a bottle of · a loaf of · a kilo of · a packet of · some · six
  • Prices: How much is the…? · How much are the…? · It’s / They’re…

Part 3: How much is the bread? — It’s two dollars. / How much are the bananas? — They’re a dollar fifty. / How much is the cheese? — It’s four dollars.
