Describing Your Home

Hook

Now combine everything from this module: there is/are, prepositions, rooms and furniture, some/any. With these you can describe your home to a new friend, a landlord or a hotel guest, in clear, well-ordered sentences.

Notice

  • I live in a small flat in the city centre. It’s on the third floor.
  • There are two bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a living room.
  • In the living room there’s a big sofa next to the window.
  • There are some plants on the balcony.
  • There isn’t a garden, but there’s a park opposite the building.
  • My favourite room is the kitchen because it’s bright and warm.

How is the description organised: from big to small, or from small to big?

Rule

Describe a home in four steps:

  1. Where and what: I live in a house / flat in… It’s on the… floor.
  2. The rooms: There are… / There’s…
  3. Details: In the… there’s a… next to / opposite / under the…
  4. Your opinion: My favourite room is… because it’s… (big, quiet, bright, cosy)

Useful adjectives: big / small · new / old · bright / dark · quiet / noisy · modern · comfortable · cosy.

Join ideas with and (more information), but (a contrast) and because (a reason).

Watch Out

  • ✗ In my house have three rooms. → ✓ My house has three rooms. / There are three rooms in my house.
  • ✗ My room is very comfort. → ✓ My room is very comfortable.
  • ✗ There is a garden but is small. → ✓ There is a garden, but it is small. (don’t forget “it”)

Practice

  1. Complete: “I live ___ a flat ___ the second floor.”
  2. Complete: “There ___ two bedrooms and a kitchen.”
  3. Join with but: “My room is small. It is very bright.”
  4. Join with because: “I love my kitchen. It is warm.”
  5. Opposite of noisy
  6. Opposite of dark
  7. Correct it: “In my flat have a balcony.”
  8. Which step comes first: rooms, opinion or where?
