Giving Directions

Hook: Now learn how to actually tell someone how to get somewhere.

Notice: “Go straight on.” “Turn left.” “Turn right.” “Go past the bank.” “Go through the park.” “Cross the road.” “It’s on the corner.”

The rule

Directions use imperatives (the base verb, no subject — see Module 0): Go, Turn, Cross, Take. Add prepositions of movement: past (by the side of), through (from one side to the other), across (from one side to the other, over a surface), along (following a line, like a street).

Practice

  1. ___ left at the corner. (Answer: Turn)
  2. ___ straight on for two blocks. (Answer: Go)
  3. Go ___ the park to get to the station. (Answer: through)
  4. ___ the road at the traffic lights. (Answer: Cross)
  5. Give 3 directions from your home to the nearest shop.
