How do you ask a new friend what they like doing in their free time — and answer the same question yourself?

Read this short conversation:

A: What do you do in your free time?
B: I like reading and playing video games. What about you?
A: I love cooking and I play football on weekends.
B: Can you cook well?
A: Yes, I can! I love making pasta.

Rule

Useful questions for free-time conversations:

  • What do you do in your free time?
  • What are your hobbies?
  • Do you like…? / Can you…?
  • What about you? — a short way to ask the same question back

Practice

  1. Ask about free time using “What…” (Answer: What do you do in your free time?)
  2. Ask the same question back quickly. (Answer: What about you?)
  3. Answer: What are your hobbies? (Answer: e.g. My hobbies are reading and painting.)
  4. Complete: A: Do you like dancing? B: Yes, I ___ dancing. (Answer: love / like)
  5. Write 2 sentences about your own free-time activities. (Answer: e.g. I like playing chess. I love watching movies.)
