How Much / How Many

Hook: Asking for a quantity, or asking a price — “how much” and “how many” are essential shopping words.

Notice: “How many apples do you want?” “How much water do you want?” “How much is this?” “How much are these shoes?”

The rule

Use How many with countable plural nouns: How many eggs? Use How much with uncountable nouns, and also to ask a price: How much is it? How much are they?

Practice

  1. ___ apples do you want? (Answer: How many)
  2. ___ milk is in the fridge? (Answer: How much)
  3. ___ is this jacket? (price) (Answer: How much)
  4. Write one question asking the price of something.
